Fantastic Filter Feeding!

Today I was learning about filter feeding. We did a experiment on how shellfish filter feed. We had to take a piece of filter paper and fold it to make a cone like shape. Then we had to put the cone into a funnel. After that we had to put the funnel into a beacon. Then we poured some blue water with bits of glitter in the funnel. The glitter acted as pollution. When we poured the water through the filter paper, the glitter stayed in the filter paper. We did the same with yellow water, which had much more glitter. The same thing happened, and that's how filter feeding works!

I enjoyed doing the experiment and making the slides. The experiment was probably my favorite thing to do because you get to find out how filter feeding animals, like shellfish eat!

I found working with a buddy a bit tricky. We weren't really cooperating, but we got the hang of it. Eventually.

  1. Dear Camille,
Thank you for explaining your learning so well!
Very interesting learning. You are right a shellfish who has lived in polluted water could make you very cik if you were to eat it. Boiling it would not remove the contamination living inside the shellfish. What could we do to try and make sure that our shellfish are healthy?
